Dear Editor:For seven years, Jerilyn Nieslanik and I have put our heads together to come up with silly ideas for senior housing’s Fossil Trot (now Tater/Fossil Trot) fundraiser. Jerilyn works her tail feathers off every year mailing registration forms, distributing posters, getting the word out to the media. The entire Nieslanik family works at putting together the race packets and come race day, all the family (including cousins!) are on course along with good friends doing their best to make certain everything runs smoothly.Kerry McQuay is always there too: helping set up, shuttling people to their spots on the course, timing. For those of you unfamiliar with this race, let me just say that it is my favorite event of the year. People of all ages participate, many of them Senior Housing residents. And who is out here in the middle of the fray cheering the loudest, laughing, smiling, taking delight in everyone’s efforts? Jerilyn! The past three years, I have also helped out with gardening at Crystal Meadows. Kerry McQuay never fails to greet me with a smile. He checks in with me frequently while on his rounds during the course of the day, and if I need anything, be it mulch or topsoil or the transport of heavy items, he is “on it!” As for Jerilyn, should a consultation be in order, I need only follow the sound of her infectious laughter and there she’ll be, usually talking and joking with a resident.I have known Jerilyn Nieslanik for 19 years. I admire her compassion, her positive attitude, her ability to communicate honestly and sincerely, her amazing organization skills, her values and a smile and laugh that never fail to brighten the darkest day. She is a gem!Managing senior housing is a huge task. After all, coping with old age and disabilities is not for sissies. With Jerilyn and Kerry on board, life IS wonderful at Crystal Meadows. Our community would be hard pressed to fill their shoes. In my experience these two exceptional people have done an amazing job, and I thank them both!Jenny TempestCarbondale
