Tenders and ringers needed

Dear Editor:

This letter is a plea to all caring individuals to give generously to the Salvation Army and help the local Rotarians who help tend the kettles at City Market and Clark’s Market this holiday season. Our local Rotary Club members have volunteered to man the kettles this year. So, please thank them for their time and effort when you drop in your donation to the Salvation Army.

The Roaring Fork Valley has seen tremendous growth over the past two decades. The needs of the working poor and families who need emergency help have also grown ” exponentially. This has been a daunting task for our local churches and charitable agencies in the valley. With the help of the Aspen Rotary, and all the other volunteer kettle tenders at Christmastime, our local churches and charities in the valley may rely on the help of the Salvation Army to help them meet the needs of the working poor throughout the year, as “need knows no season.”

Your local Salvation Army is looking for bell ringers to station outside Clark’s and City Market. We need you to give two or more hours of your time for one or more days. You can choose a time that fits your schedule. Just stop by Clark’s or City Market and drop your name and phone number in the kettle, or call Jim Markalunas at 925-7071 and leave a message.

“To share is to care.” So please contribute your time or money! All the moneys that go into the kettles are used in this valley. The kettle funds are used principally as a safety net for those who need short-term help. Through your local Salvation Army, help is available. Prescription help, rent assistance to prevent eviction and utility disconnects are some of the ways the Salvation Army helps the working poor.

Last year, 10 percent of your kettle funds were used for our local “Lift Up” food and clothing needs. Last year, we raised $12,480 from the Aspen kettles. This season, we want to raise $15,000 from Aspen kettles to help the poor. With your help we can do it!

If you wish to be a “Bell Ringer” please call us at 925-7071. We need your help at both markets. Can you help us to help those who help others?

Special thanks to the Aspen Rotary Club, and happy holidays to one and all!

Jim Markalunas
