Telluride mulls tax hike to offset falling revenue
August 3, 2009
TELLURIDE, Colo. – The Telluride Town Council is considering asking voters for two tax increases, one for the arts and special events and the other for street maintenance.
A 0.6 percent sales tax increase would generate about $650,000 a year and create a dedicated source of money for arts, special events, festivals, event infrastructure and other non-budgeted grant recipients.
The second proposal is a 3-mil property tax that would raise about $750,000 a year for a street and alley fund.
On Tuesday, the council will consider putting the proposals on the November ballot.
Town officials are looking for ways to offset a decline in revenue because of the recession.
