A local teenager was seriously injured Tuesday after losing control of his vehicle on Castle Creek Road and hitting a tree.Tyler Horn, 17, was driving toward Aspen when the 1997 Lexus sport utility vehicle he was driving went off the left side of the road.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper who responded to the scene said Horn’s condition was serious. No information was available on Horn’s condition from Aspen Valley Hospital late Tuesday night.According to the state patrol, Horn’s vehicle hit the tree broadside at the driver’s side front door. The teenager was extricated from the vehicle via the passenger-side door by members of the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department and taken to Aspen Valley Hospital. The accident happened about four miles up the road.

Horn suffered head injuries, according to the state patrol.Although there was some ice and wet spots on the road where the accident occurred, road conditions are not considered a factor, said Trooper Brian Koch of the state patrol, who is investigating the accident.

“He was traveling into an s-curve type area, where the road bends to the right, straightens out and then bends back to the left,” Koch said. He expected to complete his investigation today, which will include a calculation of how fast Horn was traveling at the time. The speed limit in that area is 35 mph, he said.Naomi Havlen’s e-mail address is nhavlen@aspentimes.com
