Tanker crash closes Highway 82

EL JEBEL ” A gasoline tanker truck crash closed Highway 82 in both directions near the main El Jebel intersection at Valley Road at about 1:45 p.m. Sunday.

Reports indicate a flammable liquid spilled onto the highway; the leak had not been stopped by 2:15 p.m.

By 2 p.m., firefighters were spraying down the spilled liquid with foam designed to stop a spark from igniting it. No injuries were reported.

No information was available as of 2 p.m. regarding when the highway would reopen. Traffic was being diverted onto a frontage road at the Valley Road stoplight and at the lower end of the Blue Lake subdivision.

The Basalt Fire Department, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol and other agencies have responded.

Additional Basalt Fire Department assistance was paged at about 2:20 p.m.
