Taking nay-saying to an extreme

Dear Editor:

I understand that people whose vocation is having opinions need to have a lot of them, but the debate about a possible new art museum and the May 5 vote that will continue the process toward one is excelling even Aspen standards.

I think the conceptual design is thrilling. I think the choice of one of the world’s greatest green architects is thrilling. I think that to complain that the process is too advanced is mistaken; there are of course equally fierce complaints, sometimes from the same people, that it’s not advanced enough. It’s conceptual, which is a meaningful word.

Perhaps this government, or this city staff, has made mistakes. This is not a tremendous shock. Perhaps all governments, and all staffs, have made mistakes. But to drive a stake through the heart of a project that will bring a truly remarkable building representing Aspen’s historic mission of arts and culture in the midst of a beautiful environment ” a building that will symbolize Aspen’s values in an incomparable way, a building that should use civic land precisely because it has such a central civic value ” to say no to a generous gift because sometime, somewhere, someone made a process error, is to take Aspen’s politically nay-saying culture to an extreme.

Let’s vote yes to continue exploring a wonderful plan.
