Take the first step, Aspen Times
Dear Editor:In response to your editorial of Friday, Sept. 30 raising an alarm call on Aspen’s traffic woes, may I suggest that the first step might come from you.You say it’s time for “Aspen’s community leaders, in both the public and private sectors, to take control of this problem (the record traffic levels and traffic jams) by reconsidering old ideas or coming up with new ones to solve what’s become an intolerable situation.”Yes, the Band-Aid solutions have not worked. In the next couple of weeks the RFTA board and staff will finalize their plan to pull up all the track in the valley – track which was to be preserved for commuter rail. Sure, they say they can always put it back, but you tell me what those homeowners and developers will say at that prospect once it’s gone!?Take the first step now. Write a second editorial urging RFTA and valley leaders to abandon this suicidal plan that will add years and millions to implementation of the valley’s long-term mass transit solutions. All that, for a measly $650,000.Jon BuschAspen
