Take a bite out of gangs

Dear Editor:

There’s a problem rising in our community involving teenagers being influenced by gang violence. This is a problem because gangs are increasing everywhere and that means that there is more violence rising. Gangs cause problems to the community because they break the law. And when these teens get in gangs they are introduced to drugs and a life without a future. This is mostly seen when teens are not in school, or they drop out; they don’t have anything to do at home so they start violating the law.

For example, a 3-year-old girl named Kaitlyn Avila was shot “point-blank” by a gang member who mistakenly thought her father was a member of a rival gang. This example shows that gangs can cause a lot problems to our community. This is one of the reasons why community members and the government should consider our policy, which we created thinking of the benefits that this can create to teenagers who are at risk of turning to gangs.

Our idea is to make more after-school activities other than sports. For example, we are proposing police officers to be part of these activities, so that this way young adults can get to know them better and not consider them a threat. This would really help teens; they will be occupied on something after school, and that way the risk of turning to gangs would be less.
