Swiss men win 24 Hours by seconds

Aspen Times Staff Report

Less than a half-minute separated the men’s and women’s winners and runners up in the 12th annual 24 Hours of Aspen endurance ski race.

The Swiss men’s team of Arno Hoenicke and Robert Moze overcame Canadians Rob Bosinger and Roman Torn just after midnight Tuesday and held off them through another 37 laps down-and-up the 3,300 vertical foot course on Aspen Mountain for the win. Team Switzerland posted a time of 2 hours, 52 minutes and 13 seconds over a total of 72 laps, beating Canada by just 20 seconds.

The U.S. Women’s team of Noel Lyons-McMenamy and Charlotte Moats led the Aspen Women’s team of Asia Jenkins and Heather Paul for most of the race, though Jenkins and Paul rallied in the final hours of the round-the-clock race and narrowed their deficit to 25 seconds when the race finished Tuesday at noon.

Trailing the Swiss and Canadians in the men’s division was Australia in third, followed by Austria, Ireland and Italy. The U.S. Men’s team and Team New Zealand were disqualified from the race Tuesday due to crashes that left racers from each team unable to continue. However, the remaining skiers from both teams continued without their partners and finished the race.
