Suspect in Salida thefts killed in Nevada standoff

The Associated Press
Aspen, CO Colorado

SALIDA, Colo. ” A man suspected of stealing firearms and a pickup truck from two Salida businesses is dead after being shot during an armed standoff in Hawthorne, Nevada.

Chaffee County Undersheriff Keith Pinkston says 31-year-old Kelly Stenstrum was the man shot by sheriff’s deputies last Tuesday.

He was a federal fugitive from North Dakota linked through a credit card purchase of tools at the Salida Wal-Mart to late August thefts from American Hunting and Fishing, and Morning Star Automotive.

Pinkston says Stenstrum drove the pickup to Nevada and committed several residential burglaries before abandoning it and stealing a Cadillac. Authorities spotted that vehicle and attempted to apprehend the suspect.

Stenstrum was shot when he refused orders to drop a weapon.
