Suspect in Carbondale shooting in custody

A Carbondale man was charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of an acquaintance Wednesday, according to Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling.

Jessie Brooks, 23, was being held on $5,000 bond at Garfield County jail Thursday afternoon.

The victim’s name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Schilling said police arrived at 1360 Barber Drive Wednesday at 11:11 p.m. in response to a 911 call from the same residence. Emergency responders determined the victim was dead at the scene.

“It appeared the victim had been shot with a small-caliber handgun,” Schilling said. He would not say how many times the victim was shot.

Brooks and the victim were not roommates, “as far as we know,” Schilling said.

Brooks will be formally charged April 16, said 9th Judicial District Attorney Mac Myers. If convicted, he faces 2 to 12 years in prison. Several witnesses were present when the shooting occurred.

Barber Drive is a tightly packed residential area of single- and multi-family homes in Crystal Village. Schilling said the police department receives a lot of complaints about parking issues on Barber Drive, but no more complaints of other infractions than in the rest of town.

Carbondale’s last shooting fatality occurred in January 1994, when Patrick “Badger” O’Boyle shot and killed a drinking buddy in a house on Garfield Avenue.
