Survey, focus groups to look at local living for Aspen-area seniors

ASPEN ” Pitkin County is embarking upon a senior housing survey, targeting Aspen and Snowmass Village residents, ages 60 and older, to provide data that focus groups will use to discuss the potential for a senior living community in the Aspen area.

A similar survey that was circulated more than a year ago to residents ages 45 and older showed great interest in retirement housing. The survey now under way is seeking feedback regarding the establishment of senior living in Aspen in the next decade.

“We already know there is a population in the Aspen area that is interested in senior living,” said Ken Canfield, a member of the Aspen Steering Committee, the group spearheading the project. “What we hope to learn with this new survey is exactly what kind of housing and services our seniors want and how soon they would move in.”

The Aspen Steering Committee has hired a national consulting firm whose specialty is the management and development of retirement communities. New Life Management and Development, based in New Jersey and California, has provided planning, development, management and marketing for retirement communities nationwide.

“Our goal is to find a way to provide senior living here so that our longtime residents and those who love the Aspen lifestyle don’t have to move away to retire,” Canfield said. “Just because we’re older doesn’t mean we’re willing to sacrifice the lifestyle and friendships we’ve established here in Aspen.”

The focus groups will meet Monday, April 1, through Wednesday, April 3, at the Rio Grande Room in the former Aspen Youth Center building and at the Schultz Health and Human Services building. Seniors, age 60 and older, are invited and encouraged to participate. Call Canfield at 429-0433 to get involved.
