Support trail while respecting nature

Dear Editor:I applaud Jim Duke and Wayne Rudd’s championing a pedestrian and bike route along the Highway 82 frontage road to the Catherine Store bridge. Garfield and Eagle counties are both responsive to the needs of their citizens, and should be petitioned to create safety lanes to encourage pedestrian commuting. The Midvalley Trails Committee of Basalt and the Carbondale Trails Committee could both be contacted to help take your petitions to the commissioners.Unfortunately for that project, RFTA has a specific mission to build a transportational trail along the whole Rio Grande corridor or forfeit its funding. That money cannot be used off the corridor. Delia Malone: Thanks for saying nature and the animals should have some small area to call their own, like a national park where animals are the privileged species and human needs take a back seat, where people can practice harmlessness and respect for the natural world.Something special happens to people, and the wild world, when we practice harmlessness and appreciation for the work of nature. For the sake of education, can we manage these three miles as a park? Arrange the entry such that we are forced to dismount while passing interpretive panels that explain park paradigms and alert us to the beauty and risks that the isolation of this part of the trail holds. And then let’s take our children there to instill love and awe while experiencing the joy and ease of personal-power transportation.John HoffmannCarbondale
