Support intelligent development

Jim Heywood
Snowmass Village

A development at Base Village will certainly bring added amenities and attractiveness to Snowmass Village. It clearly needs to be big enough to be a diverse and exciting place, and hence include residences and a superior hotel.

Ski area improvements planned related to the development will enhance our already top ranking for a ski experience. The issue before us is how big is necessary versus the downside of excessive size.

Citizens for Responsible Growth (CRG) has always been for a right-sized, new Base Village. The hundreds who support CRG support intelligent development with added recreation and economic vibrancy. Many who oppose a smaller Base Village are real estate people with a vested interest ” commissions from the greatest number of properties.

As it is, our town has surplus residential capacity every week except New Year’s. A heavier oversupply of units will decrease property values, as competition forces down rental rates. This is exactly the condition at Steamboat and Breckenridge. It helps the ski companies and some businesses, but it is bad for residential values.

The position of CRG in summary: Base Village ” yes, but smaller. CRG is an issue committee registered with the town of Snowmass Village under Colorado law.
