Support filibuster reform

Dear Editor:I would like the public to be more aware of the situation facing our political system in this country. The (U.S.) Senate is being made ineffective by filibustering. It seems to me Senate Republicans have come up with a sensible plan to return the rule of law to the process of seating federal judges – a plan that has been wrongly characterized by obstructionist Democrats as a power grab. In a democracy, you vote for or against things, you don’t block the polls. The Constitution gives the Senate the power to offer “advice and consent” on nominations to the bench – but liberals have interpreted that to mean that they have the power to “obstruct and prevent” qualified jurists from even being voted on.The GOP plan would correct that abuse by reaffirming 51 votes as the number needed to confirm a nominee. Democrats know this better than anyone, having previously argued against the misuse of filibusters to block judicial nominees.”If we don’t like somebody the president nominates, vote him or her down,” Vermont’s Patrick Leahy said in 1998. “But don’t hold them in this anonymous, unconscionable limbo, because in doing that, the minority of senators really shame all senators.”Don’t let any political party get away with this clearly political ploy. Let our senators know you support restoring Senate tradition as it relates to the judicial confirmation process.Mac RenfroSteamboat Springs
