Support a healthy lifestyle for children

Dear Editor: I want to thank the Children’s Health Foundation for putting on an informative, educational and thought-provoking evening on Jan. 13 at Paepcke Auditorium.

This event included a documentary film on the state of the national school lunch program and Dr. Jim Hill spoke to this country’s emerging epidemic of obesity related diseases and how to protect our children from them. One of his main points was that beyond what we consume, the way life is organized in each community can direct the shape of its citizens’ health and their future.

How lucky are we that for many of us our lives in this valley are spent largely outdoors and in motion. This mode of active day-to-day life coupled with nutrition can be a cure for health problems that loom for the future of children in Colorado and beyond. While Colorado adults rank in the top of healthy statistics, Colorado children, sadly, do not.

It was a pleasure to get to hear such a remarkable speaker on a subject we should not take for granted. What a treat that this eye-opening evening was free to anyone who couldn’t make a donation at the door, due to the generosity of Kelly and Cheryl Wyly and the organizational skills of Wynee Coleman.

Children’s Health Foundation works with school districts across the state to change their lunch programs to provide healthy, real food for children. The nonprofit only funds the process for districts that have 40 percent or more children who qualify for free or reduced school lunches.

This is a great organization and a worthy cause and I wanted to acknowledge them for educating all of us who attended on such an important topic for our children. It was also an important reminder to focus on the blessings of the community-created and nature-created environment that is Aspen.
