Support 2A on ballot

Dear Editor:

I encourage all Aspen voters to support Question 2A on November’s ballot, increasing by 1 percent the existing Aspen lodging tax. I believe that it is crucial we invest in our recreation and arts/cultural tourism efforts if we are to create a sustainable and stable economic future. This tax – of our visitors, not of residents – will give us better tools to do so.

I have confidence the Aspen City Council and the Aspen Chamber Resort Association will continue to use the money from this tax wisely and to direct our marketing efforts to support our existing special events and creating low-impact new ones. The excellent occupancy figures of this last weekend (as well as a really great time for all of us), thanks to Ruggerfest, the Snowmass Balloon Festival and the new 7908 Singer/Songwriter Festival excellently produced by John Oates and Gram Slaton, are perfect illustrations of what we do best.

It is essential for us to increase Aspen’s marketing resources to complement those of the Aspen Skiing Co. if we are to compete with other ski resorts, some of which have marketing budgets far greater than ours. There will be many important issues on November’s ballot, but I urge voters to take note of this important need and vote Yes on Question 2A.
