Sundeck will close before end of season

Although ski season on Aspen Mountain is scheduled to go throughSunday, April 18, the Sundeck won’t make it that long. The Sundeck will close at the end of Sunday, April 4, to giveconstruction crews enough time to finish a public cafeteria inthe new Sundeck by Christmas 1999, according to Eric Calderon,Aspen Skiing Co. vice president and project manager for the mountaintopfacility. Demolition of the existing Sundeck will start Monday, April 5.”We are building a 22,000-square-foot building at 11,200 feetin six months,” Calderon said. “That’s pretty ambitious – andit’s also pretty scary.” The Skico’s goal is to open the new public cafeteria in the Sundeckby mid-December 1999. Benedict’s, a public sit-down dining room,is scheduled to open in January while the private Aspen MountainClub won’t open until late February or March 2000. For the last 13 days of this season, portable bathrooms will beavailable to skiers at the mountaintop. Ruthie’s and Bonnie’srestaurants will remain open “pending need, weather and snow conditions,”said Calderon. Locals and visiting skiers will get two special opportunitiesto send the old Sundeck out with a bang. Although details aren’tavailable yet, two parties are being planned, according to RoseAbello, Skico communications director. The Aspen Historical Society is working on plans for a party opento the public. A daytime barbecue, probably on the first weekendof April, is also in the works. Details will be released laterthis month.
