Summit County resident killed in Marble-area slide

MARBLE – A 37-year-old male from Summit County reportedly died in an avalanche Sunday afternoon along Raspberry Creek outside of Marble, Gunnison County Sheriff Rich Besecker said Monday.

A team from Crested Butte Search and Rescue was en route to the scene Monday morning. The fatality hasn’t been confirmed by authorities, Besecker said, but the death was reported by two companions of the victim.

“This is a recovery at this point,” Besecker said.

The sheriff’s office was notified of the fatality at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. There were three people in the ski party. “Two of them were able to ski out and make this report,” Besecker said.

No rescue team was immediately sent to the field because of poor weather and dangerous snow conditions, according to Besecker. Rescuers will evaluate snow conditions in the area Monday. If it is deemed unsafe, the recovery of the body will be put on hold “indefinitely,” he said.
