Two fabulous summertime parties held in homes on Red Mountain are Alex Kaufman’s Evening at the Opera, which features stars from the Music Festival operas, dinner and dancing in Alex’s private disco, and Yoly and Mark Davis’ Sizzling Latin Night dinner and dance with Jimmy Yeager teaching the guests Latin dances.

A recent gala party on Nov. 13 was a surprise birthday celebration for Suzanne Elizabeth Pfister held at the Caribou Club.An upcoming special evening will be on Friday, Feb. 4, when Aron Ralston will present An Aspen Homecoming at the Wheeler Opera House. The evening will benefit Aspen Youth Experience, Mountain Rescue Aspen, the Wilderness Workshop and DonorDirect’s “Tide Me Over” Emergency Loans. Former Aspenite Bente Godal, who was a ski instructor and an Aspen Wintersköl queen in 1959, has moved back to Aspen from California. She tells me her daughter, Kire Godal, is living in Karen, Kenya, where her photographic company called Malika specializes in tribal photos.The Aspen Magazine holiday edition is the Fashion Issue with an 18-page spread of the season’s most glamorous and luxurious looks shot by Karl Wolfgang on location around town and up Independence Pass. Karl’s photos are moody and beautiful. The issue also includes a profile of Aspen Ski Company owner Jim Crown and a question-and-answer feature with Lyle Lovett.



Preston and Chenya Mendenhall announce the birth of a son on Nov. 23 in London, England. Preston and Chenya (she is Russian) live in Moscow, where Preston is a correspondent for NBC’s Moscow Bureau. Paternal grandparents are Mary and Kiefer Mendenhall of Aspen, while maternal grandparents are Larisa and Vladimir Kozlov of Moscow.Undercurrent … When I was growing up in the 1940s, you never ever wore high heels with jeans. Instead you always wore loafers. So I can’t get used to women of today wearing spike high heels with their slacks and jeans. And I really wince when I see women teetering on their heels on the icy streets.
