Suffocating Aspen

Dear Editor:Mick Ireland took offense at my calling him a proponent of “zero growth.” He got defensive and accused me of distorting the facts. He said he will support projects that are good for Aspen, but what might Mick consider “good for Aspen,” when he has publicly stated that, “Aspen would benefit from an economic downturn”? What do you imagine, will he deem good for Aspen, when he has stated that “The rich have destroyed Aspen”?Is that how you see it? Wheeler? Paepcke? Obermeyer? Crown? Have they destroyed Aspen, or left behind legacies of accomplishment, leadership, and monumental success?Aspenites be forewarned. Electing Ireland will suffocate Aspen and its ideals. No growth in mind, body, or spirit. No growth in policy, leadership, or design. No growth is like Mick himself – same green vest, same khaki pants, same bicycle, same frustrated, angry man. Don’t let Mick’s mind cripple your economy. You have worked too hard. Vince LaheyAspen
