Stronger drinks coming to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY ” Alcoholic drinks in Utah will soon pack a more powerful punch.

The Legislature on Tuesday approved the first major changes to the state’s liquor laws in years.

The amount of liquor allowed in the standard cocktail will increase from 1 ounce to 1.5 ounces. That’s the standard used in most other states and countries.

Gov. Jon Huntsman says he wants the change so Utah won’t appear so odd to the rest of the world.

But the changes would also ban wine coolers and other flavored malt beverages from grocery stores. Instead, they could only be sold in state liquor stores. Utah will be the only state in the country with this requirement.

Sending the fruity drinks to liquor stores means they’ll contain more alcohol, but will be harder to find.
