Storm dumps on Aspen

ASPEN – The snow dance apparently worked. Aspen Mountain picked up a much-needed 15 inches of new snow in a storm that pounded local mountains Saturday night. Snowmass reported 14 inches.

The Aspen Skiing Co. had said it needed 8 more inches of snow to open terrain at the top of Aspen Mountain and to open Aspen Highlands. The storm brought that and more. Aspen Highlands was supposed to open Saturday but its opening was delayed; Buttermilk is scheduled to make its season debut Dec. 15.

Aspen was the site of a snow dance late Saturday afternoon at Gondola Plaza and the resort was among the big winners for snowfall.

Vail reported 9 new inches in the past 24 hours, and 11 inches over the past 48 hours. All of Aspen’s snow came in the past 24 hours.

Beaver Creek collected 10 inches overnight and 14 over the past 48 hours while Breckenridge reported 8 inches overnight and 9 inches over the past 48 hours.

Steamboat reported 8 inches on Sunday morning and 9 over the past 48 hours, while Crested Butte picked up 7 inches. Copper Mountain and Keystone were each boasting 6 inches of fresh stuff.

Winter Park, on the Front Range, picked up 7 inches over the past 24 hours and 14 inches over the past 48 hours.

Aspen’s forecast calls for cold temperatures Sunday, with a high of 17 (it will be colder on the mountains), but not much in the way of additional snow. Small accumulations are possible Monday night, according to
