Step up to the plate for Basalt library

The Basalt Regional Library is in a short-term financial crunch and may have to close on Mondays to make ends meet.

I challenge everyone who voted for the library expansion proposal, which failed in this month’s election, to step up to the plate and make a donation to the library. If you were willing to raise your taxes by a couple of hundred dollars a year for a new library, surely you can pitch in some of that to keep our existing library open.

And I challenge all those who voted against the library proposal to put your money where your mouth was. You said you opposed the proposal, but supported the library. Well, the library needs your financial support now. Making a donation would also be a sign that you want to be part of a more cooperative library planning process next time around.

Finally, I challenge the library board and the Basalt Library Foundation to use this opportunity to launch an active fund-raising campaign, so that the library doesn’t have to curtail services.

Allowing the library to undergo a fiscal crisis and imposing austerity measures would only hurt patrons and staff. You’d be cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Appealing to the community for financial help and creative ideas will send a much more positive and unifying message, which will build support for the next election.
