Stand up to the radicals

Dear Editor:

The recent attempt to bomb a Northwest Airlines airplane brought to mind a recent Tom Friedman opinion in The New York Times. Friedman’s worries hit home with his strong, awakening statement that Jihad is not a location but a virus. The world, especially the moderate Muslim world, must wake up to the fact that Jihadism isn’t within set borders, it is infecting the entire globe.

The U.S. and a few allies are battling in Afghanistan and Iraq, but what about Mumbai, Pakistan, sections of Indonesia, London, Somalia and so many other areas? And what about the United States? The radical tide will not be stemmed until the moderate Muslim community stands up for modern values and says to its brethren, “Stop! Enough is enough! We’re mad as hell and we’ll tolerate your mayhem no longer!”

The moderates have been virtually silent to date. If they want true freedom and to live in harmony with the non-Muslim world, they must become hyperactive in the cause. If not, they should, and surely will, feel a strong backlash. Peace for all in this new year must be everyone’s objective.
