Spring Jam: Time to party

Perhaps it’s only fitting that Wednesday, the first day of spring, it spit snow in Aspen.So celebrate the occasion at Spring Jam, a four-day festival of free music, parties, competitions and clinics on and off the slopes – not to mention a sixth Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert of the season to close out the festivities Sunday in Snowmass.Sunday’s show will feature a reggae lineup, including Jamaica’s the Melodians, and Yami Bolo with Yellow Wall Dub Squad. The new show comes on top of already of two already scheduled concerts – tonight’s performance by JJ Grey and Mofro at Snowmass and Friday’s core party in downtown Aspen, featuring the 10-piece hip-hop-rock-salsa-funk-reggae-jazz of Ozomatli.Spring Jam opens today and continues through Sunday. The schedule looks like this:ThursdayNoon to 3 p.m. – Terrain Park Bootcamp for beginners on Fanny Hill at Snowmass, for rookies 13 and older.7 p.m. – JJ Grey & Mofro perform at the end of the Snowmass Mall.10 p.m. – JJ Grey & Mofro take the stage at Belly Up Aspen (tickets are $17).Friday2-3:30 p.m. – Big Air Competition continues on Fanny Hill at Snowmass, with live music on the mall from 3-4:30 p.m. Fireworks on Fanny Hill at 8 p.m.8:15-11 p.m. – Ozomatli performs a free concert in downtown Aspen, at the corner of Cooper and Galena.Saturday1 and 2:30 p.m. – Red Bull/SCS Sledstyle Demo – snowmobile tricks on big jumps on Velvet Falls at Snowmass. Free foot traffic permitted on Burlingame lift.7 p.m. – Kick Aspen Big Air contest at base of Aspen Mountain.SundayNoon to 2 p.m. – Snowmass Rail Revolution on Fanny Hill.2-4 p.m. – Après concert with the Melodians and Yami Bolo with Yello Wall Dub Squad at end of the Snowmass Mall.Town Race Series starting earlyBecause of the recent warm weather, this weekend’s concluding Aspen Times Town Race Series giant slaloms at Aspen Highlands have been rescheduled to start an hour earlier on Saturday and Sunday.Saturday’s advanced race will start at 10 a.m. while Sunday’s recreation race begins at 10:30. Racers who are already registered for the series need only to call the race information hotline at 544-3029 to reserve their spot in the start order. Racers who have not registered need to do so between 8 and 9 a.m. Saturday or Sunday at Crust on the Highlands Mall.
