Spring Jam events heat up
TodayAll day: St. Patty’s Day celebration, big-air competition and concert at Snowmass. Don your green party hat and kick up your heels at this all-Irish celebration. All the action takes place at the base area, including kids activities, Irish step-dancing, a big-air competition open to any leprechauns who can qualify and green beer all day long. With music by The Prodigals and The Motet.10 a.m.-2 p.m. Scavenger hunts for adults and children2, 3:45 and 6 p.m. Pipe and drum performances2-3 p.m. Big-air competition 2:15 and 4 p.m. Celtic dancersFriday7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. KickAspen Big Air Invitational at Aspen Mountain. The event showcases some of the best ski and snowboard athletes in the world competing for prize money and two Yamaha snowmobiles valued at $16,000. Skiers and snowboarders scheduled to compete include Peter and Michael Olenick, Nick Mercon, Doran Laybourn, Todd Richards and Mitch Stout. There will be prize giveaways, a beer garden, freestyle dancers, graffiti panels and a DJ at the base area.10 p.m. EL PUS, an Atlanta-based hip-hop/punk-rock act, will play at Belly Up. Doors open at 8 p.m. with a $5 cover charge.Saturday7 p.m.-8:15 p.m. Aspen Rail Revolution Invitational at Aspen Mountain. Twenty of the world’s best skiers and riders jump onto and slide a course of metal to the tunes of DJ Dylan. The Aspen Mountain gondola plaza rails will be modified with welded additions for the jibbing exhibition.8:30-11 p.m. Core Party at Cooper and Galena streets with a live performance by Arrested Development. The party will also feature hip-hop/rap performers, DJ K-NEE, Motion Underground breakers, Colorado Crush City dancers, freestyle performers from the Denver Nuggets, graffiti artists, special effects, Boogie’s beer garden and giant video screens.Sunday2-4 p.m. WSA sledstyle exhibition at Snowmass. The high-flying exhibition combines freestyle Moto X and snowmobile action.7-9:30 p.m. The NEPSA Awards (Aspen spelled backwards) at the Wheeler Opera House. Athletes were invited to create multimedia presentations using music, video, photography and other mediums to interpret this year’s theme of soul. Participants include skiers Chris Anthony, Asia Jenkins, Frank Shine, Marcus Bernier, Bridger Gile and snowboarders Mitch Stout, Avery Karas and Justin Bartle. The event will also feature the DISCulpture Challenge, an art contest with submissions displayed in the Wheeler lobby that are made entirely out of CDs. Tickets are available through the Wheeler box office at 920-5770.
