Spring cleaning, anyone?

Dear Editor:

If you have been in downtown Aspen lately you have most likely noticed that we are looking pretty sorry. The sidewalks and streets are littered with all kinds of trash, especially cigarette butts. We could make giant improvements in our appearance with a couple of simple steps:

• We merchants need to clean up around our own businesses, including the common areas of the malls and streets. No one else is going to do this for us, so let’s get on it, OK?

• Let’s shake the mindset that the best way to improve business is to park a sandwich board on the sidewalk in front of the store. That’s not the solution.

• To the big wigs at City Hall … how about taking a walk around town and notice for yourselves just how awful we look? I see people walking around with brooms, but I never see anyone supervising them.

P.S. It has now been over two weeks since the daylight savings time change, yet the clock by the rugby pitch at Wagner Park still hasn’t been set correctly. That says a lot about our town, don’t you think?
