Spreading thanks from Festival of the Americas
Dear Editor:The Roaring Fork Rotary/Club Rotario wishes to thank everyone who made our seventh annual Festival of the Americas, held Saturday, Aug. 15, at Sopris Park in Carbondale, such a success!Event sponsors included Alpine Bank, Kaufman & Kaufman, the town of Carbondale, the Community Integration Initiative, CMC, US Bank, Wells Fargo, the Carbondale Rotary, La Unin, The Post Independent, La Nueva Mix and Mi Casita/Century 21. While stiff competition from neighboring events saw our numbers drop a bit, the roughly $7,000 raised will fund CMC scholarships for exemplary local students from the class of 2010.From 11 a.m. through 8 p.m., 30 vendors and nonprofits showcased their exotic cuisine, folkloric wares and passionate ideals, and attending families enjoyed a huge children’s area, an ample beer garden, and a wide range of music from six live bands: Atrevidos de la Sierra, Grupo Alba, Mariachi “Reyes de Jalisco,” Balle Folklorico “Herencia Mexicana,” Fuerza Tropical, and Viento Bravo. Club Rotario was also privileged to award The 2009 Jackie Morales Awards for outstanding service to the immigrant community to Ashley Carruth and Jane Douglass (educators), Jahaziel Ramos (student), Luis Polar (professional) and Ginny Badger (volunteer). Each of these community leaders has devoted many hours to creating bicultural harmony and integration in the Roaring Fork Valley, and we salute their work. We are already planning to make the eighth annual Festival in 2010 the best one yet!Jim Coombspresident, Roaring Fork Rotary/Club Rotario
