With five straight wins, Basalt rolls toward title
September 30, 2003
Felipe Sanchez scored two goals and goalie Jamie Wirkler got the shutout as the Basalt High boys soccer team won its fifth straight game 4-0 against Grand Junction Central Saturday on the road.
Basalt, the two-time defending Class 3A Western Slope League champions, improved to 8-2 overall with the nonleague win over the larger, Class 5A Central.
And with four games to play, including three league matches against opponents the Longhorns have already beaten this season, Basalt remains undefeated in league at 7-0 and poised to claim the league title for a third season.
“We looked pretty good against Grand Junction Central,” Basalt coach Erik Streff said. “We’re really starting to gel together, and with only four regular-season games left, it’s time to start getting prepared for playoff time. And I think things are starting to click.”
Sanchez, a sophomore, scored two goals against GJ Central, and freshman Ryan Zubizarreta and senior Jake Rankin scored one each.
Basalt has this week off. The Longhorns return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 4, with a 1 p.m. match at Roaring Fork. In their first meeting this season, Sept. 4 in Basalt, BHS won decisively 6-1.

On Oct. 9, Basalt travels to Vail Mountain and on Oct. 14, Basalt wraps up its regular-season schedule with a match at Aspen.
“Vail Mountain and Aspen are the other top two teams in the league, so winning the league title is not going to be an easy thing by any means,” said Streff. “We expect both games to be tough ones.
“But I think the boys will rise to the occasion,” the coach added.
