Virginia duo wins men’s masters final
August 30, 2008
ASPEN ” After a grueling two-game win in the MotherLode’s men’s masters final Saturday at Koch Lumber Park, Virginia’s Rob Bailey and Jason Robertson needed a break.
Instead, they got word that their first open division match of the day was up next.
So much for a victory celebration.
Like true veterans, Bailey and Robertson sucked it up and went back out on the court in pursuit of the MotherLode’s most coveted prize: An open championship.
The lesson? At the country’s largest pro-am beach tournament, the schedule waits for no one.
To earn their first masters (over 37) crown, Bailey and Robertson outlasted last year’s winners, Matt Akromis of Denver and Jeff Pheffer of Kansas City, Mo.

Akromis and Pheffer appeared to have control of the match in the opening game after taking a 20-18 lead, but couldn’t finish. Bailey and Robertson staved off the elimination point and squared the game at 20, then pulled out a 26-24 win.
The second game was also tight, but again Bailey and Robertson were too much for the defending champions, pulling out a 21-18 win.
Open and amateur play continued through Saturday, and elimination matches begin Sunday. The amateur finals start Monday morning and the women’s open final is slated for 3 p.m. Monday, immediately followed by the men’s final.
