Basalt golfer Dylan Rakowski opened Thursday’s round at the Links at Cobble Creek in Montrose with 12 pars and a birdie in his first 13 holes. Then, he hit a snag. Make that three. The sophomore double bogeyed his 14th and 15th holes, then a triple bogey on his 17th. He still managed to finish with a 5-over-par 77 – his first sub-80 round of the season.Teammates Tristan Rohrbaugh and Robert Pettit finished with 87 and 94, respectively, on a course that will host the regional tournament later this month.Jesse Beetham shot 73, Ryan Smith 77 and Clayton Crawford 78 for Aspen, which finished first among 3A schools with a team total of 228. Gunnison (238) was second and the Longhorns (258) third. After cruising for much of the round, Rakowski ran into trouble at the par-5 ninth – his 14th hole – after hitting his drive into a pond. He rebounded from another double at his 15th hole in dramatic fashion; after hitting a hybrid to about 60 feet on the ensuing long par 3, he drained the putt, Longhorns head coach Al Rakowski said.”That’s what happens,” the coach added. “He knows he has the game and can go low. A few holes can get you.”Dylan Rakowski lost three more shots at 17; he pulled his drive left, recovered nicely, then chunked his third shot. He missed a putt for birdie at the par-5 13th, finishing his round with a par. While he struggled mightily en route to a 99 Thursday, Basalt’s Austin Vannice produced one memorable moment, Al Rakowski said. The junior drove the green at the 276-yard par-4 15th, then sank a 20-foot eagle putt.
