Skiers fall at Eagle Valley, await playoffs
September 27, 2005
The Aspen boys soccer team led 4A Eagle Valley for 68 minutes Thursday under the lights in Gypsum. That didn’t matter to the home Devils, who got an equalizer in the 69th minute, then scored again with five minutes to go to steal a 2-1 victory. While the nonleague loss was a tough one for the Skiers to swallow, it did nothing to hurt Aspen’s postseason plans. The Skiers (9-4, 6-2) locked up the second of three playoff spots for the Western Slope 3A on Thursday when Basalt beat Vail Mountain School, 2-0, in East Vail.Colorado Rocky Mountain School is currently the third team in the league standings, with a league record of 4-5. Aspen hosts VMS (3-4-1) at home at 11 a.m. Saturday, then finishes the season against Basalt at 4 p.m. Tuesday.Aspen can now only pad its overall record to secure a higher playoff seed. With Basalt winning Thursday, the Longhorns earned a bye through the state-seeding round of the playoffs. Vail Mountain will have a lot to play for Saturday. If the Gore Rangers beat Aspen, their playoff hopes remain alive. In Thursday’s game in Gypsum, the Skiers dominated for the most part but couldn’t get any more goals after junior Eric Sciarrone scored off an assist from Bo Gallagher midway through the first half.
