Preps: Soccer, softball showdowns in valley

Basalt softball is on a roll.
The Longhorns, featuring players from Basalt, Roaring Fork and Glenwood Springs, swept both games of a doubleheader last weekend against Gunnison.
The Basalt girls, behind the pitching of Morgan Ash, stopped visiting Gunnison 5-3 in the first game.
The Longhorns won the second game 15-13 for their fourth consecutive victory.
The two wins boosted the Basalt softball team to 7-7 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.
The Longhorns will hit the road for their next games. They will play at Meeker at 4 p.m. Thursday.

On Saturday, the Basalt softball team will play a doubleheader at Cedaredge.
Soccer showdowns are on the prep schedule this week, particularly with the Aspen Skiers back from a week of ex-ed.
The Skiers will host Moffat County in the first match after the ex-ed break at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Aspen School District Stadium.
The game also will be the first Western Slope League match of the season for the Skiers (2-3-1 overall.)
Moffat County is 1-1-0 in league play and 4-3-1 overall.
Aspen play Moffat County in Craig earlier this season in a nonleague match. The teams played to a 3-3 tie in a contest shortened by adverse weather.
Thursday's match also is a preliminary to a huge showdown Saturday when the Basalt Longhorns visit Aspen for an 11 a.m. match.
Basalt (2-0-1 in league and 4-5-1 overall) is coming off a 1-1 tie against Coal Ridge on Tuesday afternoon. Coal Ridge also is 2-0-1 in league play.
Vail Mountain School leads the conference at 2-0-0, 7-1-0 overall.
The Aspen High School volleyball team played a five-set thriller Tuesday at the historic AHS Skierdome.
The Aspen girls faced off against Moffat County with the visiting Bulldogs taking the first two sets 25-23, 25-17.
But then coach Matt Bergdahl's Skiers rallied with a 25-15 win and a tense 28-26 victory over the Bulldogs, forcing a fifth set to 15 points.
Moffat County won the decisive fifth set 15-5 to take the match 3-2.
The Bulldogs are 3-10 overall, 1-1 in the Western Slope League.
Aspen (1-6 overall, 0-1 in league) will play at Grand Valley on Saturday afternoon.
