Aspen High girls golf opens season

The Aspen High School girls golf team opened the season Wednesday at the Chipeta Kick-Off Classic, hosted by Palisade High School at the Chipeta Golf Course in Grand Junction.

The Skiers had a pair of golfers compete, with Avery Hirsch finishing tied for 25th and Zoe Guthrie finishing in 30th, two shots back of Hirsch. Guthrie, a junior, was the team’s lone state qualifier a season ago.

AHS next is scheduled to compete March 20 at Lincoln Park Golf Course in Grand Junction. The Skiers will have a couple of chances to compete close to home, with an April 10 tournament at Aspen Glen near Carbondale and an April 24 home tournament at the Aspen Golf Club tentatively on their schedule.

Numerous other teams open their season Saturday. Notably, the Aspen High boys lacrosse team will host rival Steamboat Springs at 4 p.m. on the AHS turf. It’s a rematch of last year’s playoff game, won by the Sailors in Aspen. The AHS girls lacrosse team is set to open their first season under coach Amanda Trendell on Saturday at Chatfield.
