Lady Longhorns win 6th straight

Aspen Times Staff Report

With a hat trick from junior forward Ukare Sano, the Basalt High girls soccer team rolled to its sixth straight win Saturday at home, 7-0 over Carbondale’s Colorado Rocky Mountain School.

Sano’s three scores, including a header “that was pretty awesome,” fueled a seven-goal first half for the Lady Longhorns, Basalt coach Heather Walker said.

In the second half, Basalt’s reserves saw most of the action while freshman goalie Darby Scherer, starting in place of a sick Maddie Hoffman, registered the shutout, Walker said.

“We looked really good – scoring all seven goals in the first half got everybody involved,” she said. “And when we found out we weren’t going to have a JV game after, a lot of our players that would sit on the bench for varsity got a lot of time and experience in the second half.”

Basalt improved to 8-0-1 in Class 3A Western Slope League play and 8-1-1 overall.

Juniors Shannon Hutton, Ashley Eaton, Meghan Stewart and senior Makenzie Holmes also scored for Basalt. Eaton remains the No. 2 scorer in Colorado’s Class 3A division with 21 goals, 13 assists.

This week, Basalt plays three games as it powers toward that fourth and final game with Eagle Valley:

On Tuesday, Basalt hosts Roaring Fork at 4 p.m.

On Thursday, Basalt plays at Aspen at 4 p.m.

And on Saturday, Basalt travels to Montrose.

“We’re looking to win all three games and hopefully get some good experience,” Walker said. “And Montrose should be a tough game. It was close last year.”
