CARBONDALE — The Aspen High School girls basketball team started slowly to open the new season.

Steamboat Springs was happy to take advantage.

The Steamboat girls, with balanced scoring up and down the lineup, eased away from Aspen to win 36-14 on Friday afternoon in the first round of the annual Brenda Patch Tournament at Roaring Fork High School.

The Skiers experienced first-quarter jitters as the Sailors held them scoreless at 8-0.

But the Skiers hit the scoreboard midway through the second quarter when Cliara Sanchez converted a foul shot.

She added two more inside baskets for a total of five points for Aspen in the quarter — all five Aspen points.

From the 18-5 halftime lead, Steamboat posted a game-high 12 points in the third quarter.

The Skiers played the Sailors to a 6-5 fourth quarter, cutting down on the turnovers that plagued them early Friday.

Sanchez led the Skiers with six points in the season opener under first-year head coach Greg Peterson.

Julia Boronski, Liza Vechiarello and Diana Flores added two points each for the Skiers (0-1).

Jessica Furr and Julia Jungquist added a point each for Aspen.

Sophomore Karly Lanning led Steamboat Springs with eight points. She was one of eight Sailors to score.

Jenna Miller and Beverly Kohl added seven each for Steamboat (1-0).

Allison Casey scored five in the season opener.

Steamboat, in all, hit on 7 of 11 fouls shots.

Aspen converted 5 of 18 from the free-throw line.

The Skiers will return to action Saturday in the Brenda Patch tournament. The Skiers will take on another Class 4A team in a 2 p.m. game against the Rifle girls.
