Eagle Valley holds off Basalt boys

Basalt head coach Danny Martinez liked the numbers in the Longhorns’ season opener Friday at the annual Brenda Patch Memorial Tournament in Carbondale.

He liked the effort of the Basalt boys team even more.

The Longhorns, with only eight varsity players, lost a tough 55-41 decision to Class 4A Eagle Valley, but their intensity left their first-year coach much more than pleased.

“I’m really happy with the way we played,” Martinez said. “Overall, we really played hard. I was really proud of them.”

He said freshmen Mike Glenn and Wade Soho stepped in from a short roster with only eight varsity players available for the season-opening tournament.

Kris Krueger led Basalt (0-1) with 12 points.

“Ivan Loya played good defense for us,” Martinez said, adding that the Longhorns cut the Eagle Valley lead to six points in the second half. But turnovers down the stretch hurt, he said.

AJ Hurd stepped up with a good game, Martinez said, also commending the play of junior Richie Gurerro.

The Basalt boys will return to the court at Roaring Fork High School at 4:30 p.m. today for a game against Steamboat Springs, another Class 4A opponent.

The Basalt girls also lost their season opener Friday, falling to the Eagle Valley girls. The score was not available by press time Friday night.
