Broncos’ Ed McCaffrey set to tackle Highlands

Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey headlines a group of celebrities coming to Aspen this weekend to participate in A Grassroots Aspen Experience’s annual fund-raiser, the Celebrity Downhill Ski Race & Gala.McCaffrey, an all-pro wideout for the Broncos in the 2000 campaign, suffered a broken leg during the Broncos’ season opener this year against the New York Giants. However, the former Stanford standout is healthy again and ready to tackle the slopes for the benefit event.The ski race is set for Saturday at Aspen Highlands, beginning at 10 a.m. An autograph-signing session will follow from 1 to 2 p.m. at the base. The public is invited to attend.McCaffrey will be joined by Broncos Hall of Famer Karl Mecklenburg, as well as Mark Jackson, one of John Elway’s favorite targets as a member of the famous “Three Amigos” receiving corps. NFL Hall of Famer Nick Bouniconti, now of HBO Sports, will also be on hand.Other events include a party at Club Chelsea tonight and a gala dinner Saturday night at the St. Regis Hotel. Tickets are still available (call 925-6671).Founded in 1991, A Grassroots Aspen Experience is dedicated to helping disadvantaged “at-risk” youth to identify and achieve their potential. AGAE works with groups of 75 youths, ages 13 to 21, from around the country each summer and winter, as well as a group of 25 Latino youths from the valley each summer.Each year, A Grassroots Aspen Experience also grants more than $50,000 to its alumni in scholarships. This weekend’s events will benefit the scholarship program, as well as AGAE’s annual programs.Incidentally, Bill Romanowski will not be attending as expected. The fierce Broncos linebacker who was on board for Denver’s back-to-back Super Bowl victories recently agreed to a contract with Denver’s most hated rival, the Oakland Raiders.
