Aspen boys golf rolls to win in season-opening tournament
The Aspen High School boys golf team entered the season with high expectations, and in its first tournament of the fall didn't disappoint. Friday at Devil's Thumb Golf Course in Delta, the Skiers torched the field for the team win and had four of the five players that shot under par.
AHS finished the day with a score of 203, giving it a 15 stroke victory over runner-up Montrose and a 27 stroke advantage over third place Basalt. Aspen senior Dominic Lanese was the low medalist, shooting a career low 7-under 65 to win by a stroke over Jordan Jennings of Montrose. Lanese even had an eagle putt on his final hole, but settled for the tournament-clinching birdie.
Tying for third was the AHS duo of senior Colter Zwieg and junior Jack Pevny, each finishing with 69. Finishing fifth was Aspen senior Dawson Holmes, who had the only other subpar round, shooting a 1-under 71.
Freshman Nic Pevny rounded out the scoring for the Skiers, shooting 81 in his first high school tournament. AHS senior Jack Hughes did not compete as he's been out of town this week.
Playing in their first tournament under new coach Joseph Fries, Basalt had a strong day with three players shooting in the 70s. Junior Blake Exelbert led the team with his 75, while senior Holden Kleager was only a shot back with 76. Sophomore Tyler Sims had 79, freshman Kyle Murray 89 and junior Jacob Fowler 99.
