BHS opens playoffs vs. Middle Park
October 25, 2002
“This is what the whole season’s about right now.”
That was the comment from Basalt High soccer Erik Streff yesterday ? on the eve of the Longhorns’ Class 3A state tournament opener against Middle Park.
Basalt, 11-3-1 on the season, enters the 16-team field as the No. 5 seed; No. 12 Middle Park stands at 6-7-2. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. today at the BHS field.
Basalt, also the two-time defending Class 3A Western Slope League champions, is looking to improve on a historic season last year when they advanced to the final four of the Class 3A state playoffs, further than any Longhorns before them.
“They were there last year and they want to follow up on that,” said Streff. “The last couple games we’ve been missing a few players, so it’s been hard on us, but the guys are ready to step up and do the job. We’ve had a good week of practice and they want to advance.”
Basalt, which tied Aspen 0-0 in the final game of the regular season, will be without a few starters today, the result of mounting yellow cards from previous matches.

“We’ll just take the approach we’ve taken all year. We have a lot of depth this year, and while it’s going to be hard to replace missing players, the guys who are out there will need to step up, take on more than they’re used to,” Streff said.
“It hurts come playoff time but we’re a tight-knit team and everyone’s going to do their part.”
? In another Class 3A state tournament match today in Denver, No. 14 Aspen (7-7-1) faces No. 3 Faith Christian (11-2-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Faith Christian.
