BHS boys come close to upset
The Basalt High School boys basketball team was a quarter away from pulling off a Class 3A Western Slope League upset, but couldn’t hold on down the stretch.
The Longhorns held a six-point advantage entering the fourth period, but Eagle Valley posted 26 points in the frame en route to a 62-57 come-from-behind victory.
Cody Gerard led the charge for Eagle Valley with 19 points, while Kevin Cruz and Jerad Schlegal tallied 15 and 11, respectively.
Basalt’s Cody Burkholder posted a game-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Ben Pollock finished with 13 points and Darren Duroux had 12 in the losing effort.
Eagle Valley improved to 11-1 in league (14-3 overall), good for second place behind Roaring Fork (11-0, 16-0). Cedaredge and Aspen are tied for third with identical 6-5 (8-8) records. Basalt (5-7, 5-11) and Gunnison (5-6, 5-11) are in a tight race for fifth place.
Basalt travels to Kent Denver Saturday for a nonleague contest at 2:30 p.m.
