The Basalt High School basketball teams swept a girls-boys doubleheader at Roaring Fork on Saturday.

The Basalt girls won their first game of the season with a 48-28 victory in Carbondale.

The Basalt boys followed with an unorthodox 57-42 win over Roaring Fork.

“We played really good defense,” Basalt girls coach Josh Mink said. “We were down 12-4 after the first quarter. But we held them to single digits the rest of the game. The key for us was our defense.”

The Longhorns took the lead with a 16-4 advantage in the third quarter.

Carsyn Knotts of Basalt led all scorers with 13 points.

Cintia Miramontes scored 12 for the Longhorns. Teammate Kate Schrock, with a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter, totaled 10 points. Kaity Johnson added nine as the Basalt girls improved to 1-4 overall, 1-2 in the Western Slope League.

“The girls played with great composure,” Mink said.

The win was the first since 2010 for the Basalt girls over Roaring Fork.

The Basalt boys encountered serious foul trouble early Saturday.

“It was an awkward game,” Basalt head coach Danny Martinez said after he was forced to use a variety of lineups because of foul issues.

“There was no rhythm at all. Everything was a little off,” Martinez said, adding the Longhorns persevered and pulled out a win.

Mike Glen led all scorers with 19 points for Basalt. Pablo Rivera scored 12 points off the bench.

Wade Soho tallied eight; Pedro Rivera scored six; and Kyle Roberts added five.

“It’s a learning experience,” Martinez said after the Longhorns improved to 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the Western Slope League.

Roaring Fork, coming off a double-overtime win at Aspen on Friday night, moved to 2-6 overall, 1-2 in conference.
