In their search to find some top-flight early-season competition for the Basalt volleyball team, coaches Dave Drozd and Erin Holmes entered the team in the Bishop Machebeuf High School Volleyball Tournament this past weekend. Expectations may have been modest against a field that included 4As Evergreen Clear Creek and Summit. Those expectations may change now. Basalt won all four of its contests and rallied from one game down in the final to beat Summit and claim the tournament crown.Basalt opened with a convincing win against Clear Creek, 25-17 and 25-10. In a tight match with Evergreen, senior Sam Christiansen led the Longhorns with 12 kills and recorded four aces. Basalt dropped the first game, 17-25, but outscored Evergreen, 40-28, during its wins in games two and three. Junior middle blocker Dayne Toney added eight kills and three blocks and senior Liz Nemiec had 15 assists. Basalt dropped a game during its second round match with 3A Erie, but regrouped and pulled out a 19-17 win in game three to advance. Toney and Senior Bailey Holmes combined for 21 kills and Nemiec recorded 17 assists and two aces. Her 63 assists in the tournament led the team.Following a convincing 25-14 win over host Machebuef in the third round, Basalt dropped the second game, 15-25. It pulled out a two-point victory in the deciding game to assure itself a spot in the finals.The Longhorns dropped the first game of their match with Summit, 14-25, but the team, led by six seniors, didn’t panic. They bested Summit by nine in the second game and pulled out the 15-9 victory in game three to take the title. Toney had 11 kills and Nemiec had 15 assist and four aces. The Longhorns open 3A Western Slope play Friday when they host rival Aspen.
