There was no letdown.A day after a hard-fought five-game win over rival Aspen, Basalt’s girls volleyball team dispatched of league foe Olathe in three games to improve to 7-0 on the season.Basalt junior middle blocker Dayne Toney notched 25 kills in the win, followed by senior Bailey Holmes with eight. Sophomore outside hitter Shelby Holmes and senior Sam Christensen each added seven kills.”Dayne is formidable player at the net and her quickness and timing with senior setter Liz Nemiec are hard to compete against,” head coach Dave Drozd said.Nemiec finished with 32 assists in the win over the Pirates. Against the Skiers, Basalt avenged last year’s loss at the district tournament. The Longhorns got off to a fast start in the first game with a 25-12 win, before the Skiers tied the match with a 25-23 win. Basalt flipped the score in the third game with a 25-23 win of its own, followed by a 25-19 Aspen win in the fourth game to push the match to the 15-point tiebreaker. Behind six straight kills from Toney to start the game, Basalt pulled away for the win, 15-11.Toney finished with 29 kills total, while Bailey Holmes added 15 and Shelby Holmes finished with 11. Against Olathe, The Longhorns rolled in the first game with a 25-13 win, then pulled out a tough 26-24 win in the second game before taking the match with a 25-19 victory in the third.To go with her seven kills, Shelby Holmes led the Longhorns with four aces. Toney and Nemiec each had three aces apiece and Nemiec finished with 42 assists in the win.The Longhorns recorded 69 digs against the Pirates with Bailey Holmes tallying 25, Christensen adding 23 and Shelby Holmes finishing with 17.Basalt has nearly a full week off before a huge test against undefeated Gunnison. The Cowboys, who are currently tied with the Longhorns atop the 3A Western Slope standings, were ranked third overall in 3A in Monday’s Rocky Mountain News.Aspen, which fell to 5-2 overall, plays at Coal Ridge today, then hosts Cedaredge Friday.
