Basalt falls to 4A Demons
September 24, 2008
BASALT ” If there’s such a thing as a good loss, this likely was it.
After big wins over Region 7 rivals Aspen and Vail Mountain School last week, Basalt was brought back to earth Tuesday afternoon at home against 4A Glenwood Springs.
The Demons controlled the midfield throughout the game and got goals from Clay Hawkins, Fabian Tapia and Sydney Van Horn for a 3-0 win to improve to 6-2.
The loss for Basalt (4-2-3, 4-2-0 Region 7) meant nothing in terms of its standing atop its region, and, if anything, was a great test for a team that has aspirations of returning to 3A’s final four at the end of the season, coach John McDermott said.
“They were very skillful and they had a lot of speed,” McDermott said of the visiting Demons. “My kids were just a little flat. There were just a couple of good goals from them in the first half. They just overstretched our goalie [Scott Riggins]. He’s only a sophomore and he’s only going to get better.”
Basalt wasn’t without its scoring chances, but couldn’t break through with a goal. Midway through the second half, the Longhorns’ Omar Lopez had an open look on net and blasted a shot from about 20 yards out, only to watch it ping off the crossbar.

“We just couldn’t capitalize,” said Basalt senior sweeper Marshall Cleveland. “We kind of played well against them at times, but things really weren’t going our way.”
“It was a good experience for them to see a team that could move the ball,” McDermott said. “We had our chances. We missed about three or four really good opportunities. We’ll be up for the game Thursday against Coal Ridge.”
Basalt hosts the Titans at home at 4 p.m.
