ASPEN – Conner Roper crossed the line in fifth place to help lead the Basalt boys to a seventh-place finish in Saturday’s Chris Severy Cross Country Invitational at Aspen High School.

The junior finished the grueling 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 7 seconds – 31 seconds off the winning pace set by Durango’s Rogan Brown. Fruita Monument’s Woody Seagrin (18:51.3) and Telluride’s Ty Williams (18:54.4) rounded out the top three.

Brown’s effort, coupled with teammate Chas Schwaebe’s 10th-place finish, helped Durango lock up the team title with 53 points. Fruita (54) wound up second and Moffat County (61) third.

The Longhorns boys finished first among 3A schools.

“I was really pleased with the way they ran,” Basalt head coach Ron Lund said. “Conner was solid. He likes this course. When you like a course, especially one this tough, that’s half the battle. … He really embraces the difficulty.”

Two runners failed to finish for the Aspen boys, who subsequently did not qualify for a team score. Results outside the top 10 were not available Saturday because of a timing issue.
