Basalt basketball pulls sweep of Gunnison, AHS falls to Olathe

The Basalt High School boys basketball team snapped a two-game skid on Friday with a 50-47 win over visiting Gunnison.
The Longhorns struggled early and trailed 27-18 at halftime. Basalt's nine-point deficit remained going into the final quarter, where BHS outscored the Cowboys 17-5 to rally for the win.
"We are finally getting game experience that allows us to execute in tight games down the stretch. That's been a big problem for us," Basalt coach C.P. Martinez wrote via text. "It was the type of win where we battled and fought for one another. It's the type of win that builds programs."
Gunnison fell to 1-11 overall with the loss, while Basalt improved to 3-9 overall. The Longhorns' only other wins came Dec. 1 vs. Las Animas (68-25) and Jan. 11 over Aspen (70-46).
BHS girls 37, Gunnison 35
The Basalt High School girls basketball team needed bonus time, but found a way past visiting Gunnison on Friday, 37-35. BHS led 9-3 after a quarter and 18-13 at halftime. Gunnison rallied back in the second half to force overtime, where the Longhorns got the extra basket they needed for the win.

The BHS girls improved to 4-8 overall, while Gunnison fell to 6-6.
Both the Basalt boys and girls play Cedaredge Saturday.
Olathe 73, AHS boys 42
The Aspen High School boys basketball team had its two-game win streak snapped on Friday in a 73-42 loss to visiting Olathe.
The Skiers had won back-to-back games against Lake County (62-35) and Moffat County (57-44) last weekend to snap an eight-game skid, but couldn't keep the momentum going against the Pirates.
Olathe improved to 7-5 overall, while Aspen fell to 3-9 overall.
Olathe 41, AHS girls 26
The Aspen High School girls basketball team lost 41-26 to visiting Olathe on Friday. The Skiers started hot and trailed only 14-11 after a quarter, but was limited to three points in the second quarter and trailed 24-14 at halftime.
Olathe only outscored the Skiers 17-12 in the second half, but AHS was held to only 22 percent shooting for the game and couldn't make up the ground. Olathe wasn't much better, shooting 28 percent for the game.
The Aspen girls fell to 1-11 overall, while Olathe improved to 4-8.
Both the Aspen boys and girls are scheduled to host Gunnison Saturday.
