Aspen volleyball takes another step toward postseason with sweep of Basalt

It was a dangerous setup for the Aspen High School volleyball team on Thursday against Basalt. Needing to win in order to remain comfortably within the postseason RPI bubble and hosting their downvalley rival, the Skiers were able to avoid any traps and cruised to a 3-0 win.

"It was huge," AHS coach Bailey Holmes said. "Basalt always brings a big energy into the gym. Instead of backing away from it, these girls matched it and even took it to the next level."

Aspen rarely found itself in trouble en route to 25-20, 25-11 and 25-20 set victories. The win gives AHS the season sweep of Basalt in three matches played this fall.

"They've got a solid program. They make very few errors," Basalt coach David Chadbourne said of Aspen. "Tonight where I think they got frustrated is they could never get into a rhythm and stick with it for any length of time."

For Aspen (11-4 overall), the win should keep it comfortably within the top 36 needed to make a regional tournament. AHS was No. 25 in Class 3A prior to Thursday's game.

The Skiers host Olathe (4-12) at 1 p.m. on Saturday for senior day. They then finish the regular season at a tournament hosted by Manitou Springs on Oct. 28.

Basalt (8-9 overall) needs a little help to make the postseason. BHS had an RPI of No. 47 prior to Thursday's game.

The Longhorns also play Olathe later on Saturday afternoon before hosting their final home game on Tuesday against Rifle. They finish the regular season on Oct. 28 at a tournament hosted by Bennett High School.

"We knew we had to bring our best game to be able to beat them tonight," Chadbourne said after the Aspen loss. "Unfortunately our girls didn't do that. Disappointing, but we'll regroup and go back at it on Saturday."
