Aspen High School's Blake Harvey (3) hammers a spike during a match earlier this season. Harvey was among the Skiers named to the academic all-state team for the fall season.

You can call these Skiers all-staters. Make that academic all-staters.

A total of 65 Aspen High School student-athletes were honored this week when they were named to the fall season academic all-state teams by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA).

The governing body of Colorado prep athletics and activities announced that 54 Skiers earned academic all-state first-team honors. An additional 11 AHS student-athletes received academic all-state honorable mention honors.

According to the CHSAA standards, first-team honors are given to those students with 3.60 or higher cumulative grade-point averages.

Students with grade-point averages 3.30 to 3.59 earned honorable mention recognition, according to the announcement from CHSAA Commissioner Paul Angelico.

Now in its 17th year, the Academic All-State program has recognized thousands of students throughout the state in the three sports seasons.

"The Academic All-State program continues to showcase the impressive students we have in our programs," Angelico said "This program is one of just a few that honors those special individuals who have succeeded in the classroom as well as in their chosen activities."

He said that to earn academic all-state honors, a student must be a significant contributor to his or her team or activity. It is limited to juniors and seniors.

"We know through a myriad of research that those students who participate in high school activities are more likely to remain in school, miss fewer days and enjoy greater success in life," Angelico said. "A Colorado study shows that the average participant in our state holds a 3.06 grade-point average. Interscholastic activities are a critical ingredient in the education of our young people."
